GEOLOGICAL BIO
In oriented strand board (OSB), knotty, crooked trees and scrapped lumber are reconstituted into solid planes. Trees deemed too irregular and unstable to be used for dimensional lumber are stranded and recombined with other nonconforming trees to create new uniform planes.
The physical strength afforded by the combination of waste woods are a Holocene invention, though this is not the usual collaboration between different tree species, which have been sharing resources and information since Devonian times through branching networks belowground.
See also Plywood, Particle Board, and Dimensional Lumber.
EXTRACTION / MANUFACTURING PROCESS
Harvest logs ︎︎︎ sort according to species ︎︎︎ immerse in conditioning ponds for cleaning and thawing ︎︎︎ debark ︎︎︎ “strand” logs (slice into thin strands of specific size) ︎︎︎ dry through rotary dryer ︎︎︎ sieve off fine particles ︎︎︎ blend wood with resin and wax ︎︎︎ pass strands through "orienters" (to form a mat of superimposed layers) ︎︎︎ press at high pressure and temperature ︎︎︎ finish and cut to panel sizes ︎︎︎ pack and ship
